Your Giving Vehicle, Your Community

HelpLink is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit platform that connects local people with the donors and companies who want their giving to make a clear, immediate difference close to home. When someone faces a barrier to work, health, or safety, they request help directly. HelpLink reviews and posts each request, matches it with donor funding, and once it's fully funded, fulfills the need directly — no cash is ever given.

You can give directly, or through a donor-advised fund, appreciated stock, a family foundation, or an IRA qualified charitable distribution — and aim your generosity at the local needs and causes you care about. You'll get transparent reporting, confirmation, and thanks that show exactly where your dollars went and the impact they made.

Ways to Give Locally.

HelpLink is a 501(c)(3) public charity, so it can receive gifts through every vehicle below.

Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)

Recommend a grant to HelpLink from your donor-advised fund — whether it's held at a national sponsor or your local community foundation. Start the gift here first and we'll send you the remittance details and a reference code to pass along, so your grant is matched to your preferences the moment it arrives.

Appreciated Stock & Securities

Give long-held appreciated stock instead of selling it first. Enter your tickers and share counts, and we'll email brokerage transfer instructions. Your acknowledgment describes the shares received rather than assigning a value — under IRS rules, determining fair market value is the donor's responsibility.

IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution

If you're 70½ or older, you can direct a qualified charitable distribution straight from your IRA to HelpLink, and a QCD can satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution. The IRS indexes the annual limit each year — your custodian or tax advisor can confirm the current one.

Family Foundation

Grant from your family foundation to fund verified, itemized needs in the communities your family cares about — and get back the documentation and reporting your foundation needs for its own records and filings.

Why Give Through HelpLink

Local, and Actually Direct

A grant doesn't disappear into a general operating budget. It covers a specific, verified need — a car repair that saves a job, a past-due utility bill, a mattress, work boots — for a real household near you.

Aimed Where You Choose

Set preferences for your gift: the community it should serve first, the kinds of needs it should cover, and a cap per recipient if you want your giving spread further. If nothing matching is open when the funds arrive, we apply them to the closest match.

Reporting to the Penny

You get an acknowledgment written for the vehicle you used, a running record of your giving, and — when the person you helped chooses to send one — a photo and a thank-you note that closes the loop.

Money in a donor-advised fund has already been given away — the deduction is taken, the decision is made. All that's left is where it lands, and whether you ever find out what it did. Recommend a grant to HelpLink and it becomes a repaired transmission, a kept apartment, a first week of work.

What Our Donors Are Saying

"HelpLink has given me the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives, who are simply in a rough spot and just need a little boost to make their lives easier. It’s such an easy process, and I really feel secure in knowing that the money I donate goes directly to the cause intended. Something as small as body wash or towels can really make a huge difference in someone’s life, and it’s such an easy process to help a fellow human being."

— Carissa

"HelpLink has been a gratifying way for me to connect and contribute to my community. I love the ability to choose where I can make the most impact on someone’s life with what I can afford to give. Helping others is essential in showing others they are not alone and that someone cares."

— Jeannette T.

Questions Donors Ask

Can I recommend a grant to HelpLink from my donor-advised fund?

Yes. HelpLink is a 501(c)(3) public charity (EIN 81-5466752), so it's an eligible grantee at any DAF sponsor — the national sponsors such as Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable and Vanguard Charitable, as well as community foundations and single-issue sponsors. Most let you recommend a grant online in a few minutes. Start your gift on HelpLink first so we can send you the remittance details and the reference code your sponsor should include; that code is what lets us match the grant to your giving preferences when the check arrives.

Can I choose where my gift goes?

You set preferences: the community your gift should serve first, the kinds of needs it should cover, and an optional cap per recipient so a single gift can help more households. Because a DAF grant, QCD, or stock transfer arrives from a third party days or weeks after you set it up, we apply the funds to your preferences first, and if nothing matching is open by then, to the closest match — geographic and organizational proximity first. Needs are always fulfilled directly: HelpLink buys the item or pays the bill, and never distributes cash.

How do I donate appreciated stock or securities?

Choose "Donate Stock or Securities" when you give, then enter each ticker and the number of shares — you can list several securities in one gift. We'll email brokerage transfer instructions and a reference code for your broker. The gift is recorded once the shares are received and sold, and your acknowledgment describes the property received rather than assigning a dollar value to it, because under IRS rules determining the fair market value of a non-cash contribution is the donor's responsibility.

Can I make a qualified charitable distribution from my IRA?

Yes. If you're 70½ or older, your custodian can send a qualified charitable distribution directly from your IRA to HelpLink, and a QCD can satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution for the year. The IRS indexes the annual QCD limit for inflation, so check the current figure with your custodian or tax advisor. Note that a QCD works differently from a normal gift: it isn't treated as a tax-deductible charitable contribution — instead the amount is excluded from your taxable income — and HelpLink's acknowledgment says so explicitly.

Is my gift tax-deductible?

It depends on the vehicle, and HelpLink's acknowledgment is written to match. A gift you make directly may be tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. A grant from a donor-advised fund carries no additional deduction for you, because the charitable deduction was already taken when you funded the DAF. A QCD is excluded from taxable income rather than deducted. HelpLink is a 501(c)(3) public charity, EIN 81-5466752, and no goods or services are provided in exchange for a contribution. HelpLink can't give tax advice — please confirm your own situation with your advisor.

What do I get back after I give?

An acknowledgment written for the vehicle you used, a running record of your giving in your HelpLink account, and — when the person you helped chooses to send one — a photo and a thank-you note delivered straight to your inbox once their need is met. A Statement of Giving for the year is available on demand in your account, for your own filing or your foundation's records.
